What Is Careers Triage Interviewing?

Triage interviewing is the initial conversation that takes place when a young person is referred into the careers guidance system. Its purpose is to establish their current situation, identify immediate priorities, and prepare them for a more in-depth session with a qualified adviser. In many schools and colleges, this initial stage is carried out by tutors, form teachers, pastoral leads, librarians, and student support staff who are not qualified careers advisers.

This qualification gives them the skills and professional grounding to do that work well.

Who Is This Qualification For?

This qualification is for education professionals who regularly carry out initial careers conversations as part of their role. Typical learners include form tutors, pastoral leads, library staff, learning support assistants, and student services staff in schools, colleges, and similar settings. What the Qualification Covers

The qualification covers the principles and practice of careers triage, including how to conduct an effective initial conversation, how to assess and prioritise a student's immediate needs, the boundaries of the triage role, and the referral process to qualified careers advisers. The three units (4, 5 & 6) that make up this qualification are taken from the Level 6 Diploma in Career Guidance & Development and can be used towards the full diploma at a later date.

How It Is Delivered

Delivered live online via Microsoft Teams in small cohorts, with assessor support throughout. Sessions are tailored to the practical realities of working in schools and colleges and fit around existing work commitments.
